Consumers around the world have never been as environmentally conscious when consuming goods and services as we are today. Primarily, we would think of our choices surrounding fashion retail, grocery shopping and energy consumption, when it comes to reducing our carbon footprint. However, there are many other ways in which we can improve our sustainability practices, including our choice of flooring for our homes and businesses. In addition to being eco-friendly, sustainable flooring options can also be better for your health and can even be more cost-effective than other options. In this blog, we’ve put together a list of our most sustainable flooring types and brands for you to consider for your next flooring project.

Modulyss Carpet Tiles

Designed and manufactured in Belgium, modulyss has over 25 years experience in delivering superb, sustainable flooring, and we are proud to be the exclusive distributor of modulyss carpet tiles in the Republic of Ireland. Through their use of ECONYL yarn from recycled nylon, 90% recycled felt backing and CO2 neutral carpet tiles, modulyss takes pride in their commitment to the environment. All products possess an A or A+ BREEAM rating and also make a positive contribution to LEED certification when specified.

The company is also an associate partner of Healthy Seas® which was established to protect our water by collecting abandoned fishing nets. These nets are then recycled into carpet tile yarn which is used in the company’s 10 eco ranges. Modulyss has also recently announced that 9 of their collections have been Cradle to Cradle Certified™ Gold. This is a globally recognised independent standard for products with a positive impact on the environment in which brands undergo an extensive assessment of both environmental and social factors in order to become certified.

Contract Flooring currently supplies over 48 collections of stunning carpet tiles designed to mix and match in a range of different sizes and patterns, there is no limit to the versatility of modulyss carpet tiles. Our range includes products from modulyss First Forward, First Straightline, First Streamline, First Define, and First Decode.

Marmoleum Flooring

Forbo are another great brand who pride themselves on their sustainability credentials. Marmoleum, the Forbo linoleum brand, is entirely created from raw materials obtained from their natural habitat right where they grow and renew, often in the space of just 12 months. The impressive carbon-neutral flooring is made from 97% natural, raw materials, 70% of which are rapidly renewable along with 43% recycled content. The key raw materials used in the production of the flooring include linseed oil, wood flour and jute, all of which contribute in their own specific way to the production and formation of the flooring.

Marmoleum products are durable, long-lasting and naturally bacteriostatic which means that it is resistant to MRSA and E-Coli and has been approved by Allergy UK. Available in a wide range of colours, designs and sizes, Marmoleum is the perfect choice for both commercial and residential flooring.
